Hot Job Fair in Myrtle Beach!

Myrtle Beach Job FairI needed a good attention grabber for this article.  I think this one does the trick and it does relate to jobs.  Not surprisingly, many people who are considering relocating to Myrtle Beach have to get a job.  Well, there will be a job expo tomorrow, February 28 from 10–3, at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

The Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association and Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments, South Carolina Security Employment Commission, and the Coastal Work Force Center are sponsoring the expo.  Approximately 100 employers are expected to be here.  With the Hard Rock Park and the Market Common both set to open this spring, there are thousands of new jobs here. Bring loads of resumes and maybe a Red bull to keep chipper!

Do Myrtle Beach Schools Get Good Grades?

Report card myrtle beachIf you’re considering moving to Myrtle Beach and you have kids, then you are, at least, curious about the schools here.  I was a teacher and counselor in the tiny school system my son attended in Illinois.  It caused me major anxiety to think about moving him from that school and moving him from the school system where mommy knew everybody and everything that was going on.  Well, after two years of research, we moved.

Lawson’s adjustment was way easier than I would have ever imagined.  His school, Forestbrook Elementary, is great.  They have an honors program (Pelicans), plenty of computers, and as you can see from my last article, they do cool things like trips to swim with manatees.  But, with South Carolina perennially ranking at the bottom nationally for school performance, what about some hard evidence that Horry County is any different?  Take a look at the Horry County School’s report cards.  These reports give stats on all the basics and then some that size up whether a school is doing what it’s supposed to be doing.  You can also view the attendance zones so once you find schools that match your criteria, you can figure out where to move.

And, once you’ve figured out where to move, I know an excellent Realtor who can help you find an A+ house.

Manatee Road Trip- Two Thumbs Up!

forestbrook For over a decade, the fifth grade students at Forestbrook Elementary have taken an extreme field trip to swim with manatees in Florida.  The destination is Crystal River, a pristine body of water leading to the Gulf of Mexico, home to thousands of manatees.  The warmer canals provide the perfect place for the manateees to stay warmer in winter and the perfect place to view these awesome, gentle creatures.

Manatees-sm

In 24 hrs., Nu Horizons  dive shop led us snorkeling on three different areas abundant with manatees and other sea life.  We started at 7 a.m. and the weather was cold (I really didn’t want to hear the exact temp).  I was freezing and the thought of immersing my freezing body in water wasn’t pleasant.  However, it was worth it.  And, the time with my son (who turned 11 on the trip) snorkeling the clear waters, petting manatees, and huddled together under towels on the boat was incredible.  Talking with the principal, Mr. Caulder, I learned he has fought hard to keep this trip going under pressure that it isn’t academically necessary.  I’m so grateful he didn’t give up.  This is absolutely one of the best experiences I’ve had with Lawson.

We’ll go back again, but in July!
