Wild Blue’s Yonder!

Hard Rock- Soft Open

Is this some strange proverb? No, the Hard Rock Park had a “soft” opening on Tuesday.  I have yet to go, but went on an unofficial backstage tour last week, and it is so awesome!  The look and feel of the place is fun and edgy– it’s no Disney World.  My first clue was the poster outside the Hard Candy store of a chic with nothing on but lollipops.

The Led Zeppelin and Life in the Fast Lane coasters took their first riders with front seats going to the highest bidders on eBay.  The $6,000 raised went to CEO Steve Goodwin’s late wife’s charity the Sarah Goodwin Foundation.

I live barely five minutes from the park and heard fireworks as I was tucking Lawson into bed. No screams from the roller coaster, just a few muffled booms.  I can live with that easily.  We already could hear the fireworks from Broadway at the Beach once in awhile anyway.

This is Disney World thirty years ago, and I am glad I have a house in such a prime location and I didn’t pay Disney World price.  With the opening of the Hard Rock and the  Market Common city center, Myrtle Beach has more than ever to offer residents and visitors.

Myrtle Beach Rocks!

house of blues myrtle beachI have been there to enjoy my son’s first steps, first words, and, now, his first rock concert!  We went to the House of Blues last week to see Rusted Root.  They are a great jam band best know for the single “Send Me on My Way” featured in Ice Age (which hasn’t every parent seen like 20 times?).

We had awesome seats on the upper level courtesy of local real estate attorney Robin Ciaccio. The concert was fantastic and seeing my son’s face as he really absorbed the music was even better.  I really want to put a plug in for the opening act One Flew South.  They are absolutely the best new band I’ve heard in years. Their harmonies sounded just as pure as The Eagles.  We came home and immediately down-loaded “My Kind of Beautiful.”

The next day, my son said (without being prompted) “That was the most awesome day of my life.”  Wow.  Having my son appreciate good music is important to me, and hearing that comment, well, it was a satisfying mom moment.

My 15 Minutes of Fame Part II: House Hunters Returns

myrtle beach house huntersThe House Hunters crew that was here in November came back this week to follow up with my buyers, Sarah and Kelly Geyer.  This time was a much warmer day and we didn’t have to wear parkas while filming the “shouldn’t it be warm there?” Myrtle Beach episode.  The pic includes the Geyers, the sound guy, and myself.

Again, it was a great experience and amazing how time consuming to film each room– get the lighting, sound checks, us screwing up what we said, etc.. We were quite loopy by the end of the day and elated when the producer declared our last scene a “one hit wonder.”

It is going to be incredible exposure for me, and my buyers were so thrilled to have their moving journey filmed for national tv.  And, just in case you ask, we have no idea when it will air– months from now.  So, my fame will have to wait.

Do Myrtle Beach Schools Get Good Grades?

Report card myrtle beachIf you’re considering moving to Myrtle Beach and you have kids, then you are, at least, curious about the schools here.  I was a teacher and counselor in the tiny school system my son attended in Illinois.  It caused me major anxiety to think about moving him from that school and moving him from the school system where mommy knew everybody and everything that was going on.  Well, after two years of research, we moved.

Lawson’s adjustment was way easier than I would have ever imagined.  His school, Forestbrook Elementary, is great.  They have an honors program (Pelicans), plenty of computers, and as you can see from my last article, they do cool things like trips to swim with manatees.  But, with South Carolina perennially ranking at the bottom nationally for school performance, what about some hard evidence that Horry County is any different?  Take a look at the Horry County School’s report cards.  These reports give stats on all the basics and then some that size up whether a school is doing what it’s supposed to be doing.  You can also view the attendance zones so once you find schools that match your criteria, you can figure out where to move.

And, once you’ve figured out where to move, I know an excellent Realtor who can help you find an A+ house.
